Oil and mixed media on paper
Canvas base
92 x 122 cm
£800

An homage to women ...

This piece started life on the floor of an innovative group workshop. The model walked back and forth over a large length of communal paper, selecting and wearing articles of paper-based ‘clothing’ previously made by group participants. The background mark making came from this process as bamboo sticks with assorted ends such as charcoal and paint, were used to capture this co-operative movement. A static pose and oil bars which give large gestural sweeps of colour gave cause to the central figure and that torn section of paper came home.
After drying it was attached to a stretched canvas base and the raised texture was manipulated into place during this process. Now being able to carry this piece, meant further life modelling occasions were used to paint in two more figures and the ground was developed to capture a timeless and earthy feeling. This batik-like effect encompasses the often hidden but ever present and ongoing strength of women.
